Facts About Foxes In Chile

Throughout Chile, there is a great amount of biodiversity that led to the immense preservation efforts. There is over 5,000 higher-level plants and trees, 40 of which are currently threatened. Chile is home to over 400 different species of mammals, reptiles, amphibians, and fish. It is also home to some 157 different bird species, 22 of which are currently threatened. The southern region of Chile is known as the Patagonia that is also the home to the southern biosphere and national park reserves. Here many animals from foxes to flamingos inhabit. Facts about foxes in Chile are very amusing.

Foxes or Darwin's Foxes are named after Charles Darwin, the famous scientist. Darwin's Foxes can be found in the temperate forests of Chile, South America. They subsist in two small distinct populations; one population is on the island of Chiloe and others in the Nahuelbuta National Park. Darwin’s Foxes mainly feed on small mammals, reptiles, birds, amphibians, insects and fruits. They breed once a year in October and they produce litter of 2 - 3 cubs. There are no subspecies of Darwin's Fox. The Foxes are also known in different names such as, Darwin Fox, Darwin’s Zorro, Zorro de Darwin, Zorro Chilote and Zorro de Chilote.
